Ask anyone why their cooler "does not cool like it used to" and you will hear that it has gotten old. Usually it has not. Usually the pads are scaled, the tank has a film of sediment and the pump is pushing water through a partly blocked line. All three are twenty-minute fixes.
The weekly check - two minutes
- Look at the water level before you switch on. Running the pump dry is the fastest way to kill it.
- Feel the pads. They should be evenly wet across the whole face. Dry patches mean the distribution line above them is partly blocked.
- Listen to the pump. A healthy pump is a low hum. Rattling or intermittent buzzing means sediment.
The monthly clean - twenty minutes
- Unplug it. Not negotiable - you are about to handle water and a motor.
- Drain the tank completely and wipe out the sediment at the bottom. In hard-water areas this will be a fine white grit; it is what eventually clogs the pump.
- Remove the pads and rinse them from the clean-air side outwards under a gentle stream. Do not scrub honeycomb pads with a brush - the cell walls are what make them work.
- Descale if needed. Soak the pads for 15–20 minutes in a weak solution of white vinegar and water (roughly 1:4), then rinse thoroughly. This dissolves the chalky deposit that blocks airflow.
- Clear the pump inlet and the distribution pipe. The small holes along the top pipe block first. A toothpick or a burst of water clears them.
- Wipe the fan blades and grille. Dust on blades measurably reduces air delivery.
- Refit everything and run it for five minutes on high before you call it done.
Hard water is the real enemy. Across much of north and west India, tap water leaves scale that builds on pads and inside the pump. If you can, use filtered or softened water for the tank. If you cannot, descale monthly rather than seasonally - it takes the same twenty minutes and saves the pads.

Honeycomb pads cost more upfront and last around three times as long, which is why they usually work out cheaper across the life of the cooler - and why they hold their cooling performance far better in between cleans.
Fixing the three most common complaints
"It smells musty"
Standing water plus organic matter in the pads. Drain the tank fully, clean the pads, and - the part people skip - let the pads dry completely before the next use. Running the fan alone for 15 minutes after you switch off the pump does this automatically and prevents the smell from ever starting.
"The pump runs but the pads are dry"
Almost always a blocked distribution pipe or a clogged pump inlet filter, not a dead pump. Remove the top pipe, flush it, and clear the outlet holes. Check the pump inlet mesh for sediment.
"It makes the room humid instead of cool"
This is an airflow problem, not a fault. The cooler needs fresh air coming in and humid air going out. Open a window on the far side of the room. On genuinely humid days, run a lower fan speed and do not overfill the tank - less water in circulation means less moisture released.
Putting it away for the monsoon
- Drain and dry the tank fully. Any water left behind will breed and stain.
- Remove the pads, wash them, and dry them in the shade before storing. Sun-drying makes wood wool brittle.
- Wipe the interior dry and leave the panels off for a few hours so residual moisture escapes.
- Store the cord loosely coiled, not wound tight around a bracket - tight winding stresses the insulation at the exit point.
- Cover it, but with something breathable. A sealed plastic sheet traps moisture against the body.
The pre-season restart
Before the first hot week, give it fifteen minutes: refit clean pads, fill the tank, run the pump for five minutes and check that water is reaching the full width of the pads, then run the fan on all three speeds. Finding a blocked pipe in March is a minor errand. Finding it in May is a bad evening.

Can I use detergent to clean cooling pads?
Avoid it. Detergent residue foams in the tank and can leave a smell. Plain water for routine rinsing, and diluted white vinegar when you need to shift scale.
How often should I change the water in the tank?
Every two to three days in regular use, and always if the cooler has stood unused for more than a few days. Fresh water is the simplest odour prevention there is.
Is it safe to add ice to the tank?
Yes, if your model has a dedicated ice chamber. It gives a short, noticeable boost. It is not a substitute for clean pads and good airflow, and the effect fades within about twenty minutes.
The cooler trips the MCB. What now?
Stop using it and get it checked. Water reaching the motor or a degraded pump winding is the usual cause, and it is not a DIY repair. A model with thermal overload protection will usually shut itself down before this point.
Twenty minutes a month, and one careful pack-up before the monsoon. That is the whole routine - and it is the difference between a cooler that lasts three summers and one that lasts ten.
